Munster Rugby ( Irish Rugbaí Mumhan) is a professional rugby union team from the Province of Munster in Ireland . She plays in the international championship Pro14 and takes part in European cup competitions. The team represents the Irish Rugby Football Union Munster Branch , one of four sub-associations of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). Home stadiums are Thomond Park in Limerick and Musgrave Park in Cork . The greatest successes are three championship titles in the Pro14 / Celtic League and two cup wins in the Heineken Cup .

history

The team was founded in 1879 and played in the amateur era against the other three provinces ( Connacht , Leinster , Ulster ) for the Irish provincial championship. She also competed regularly against national teams in the southern hemisphere. The team achieved their most glorious victory on October 31, 1978, when they defeated the All Blacks 12-0 at Thomond Park . For a long time this was the only win for an Irish selection against the New Zealand national team .

Since the professionalization of rugby union in the 1990s, Munster Rugby has participated in the Celtic League, the championship of Ireland, Scotland and Wales . After three unsuccessful attempts, Munster qualified for the quarterfinals of the Heineken Cup for the first time in 1998. In 2000, the team advanced to the final, at Twickenham Stadium in London they were defeated by the Northampton Saints 8: 9. Also with only one point difference, Munster lost a year later in the semi-finals Stade Français .

In 2002 Munster was again in the final of the Heineken Cup, but lost at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff 9:15 against the Leicester Tigers . In 2003 Munster had to win in the last group game against the Gloucester RFC with at least 27 points difference in order to reach the quarter-finals, this was achieved with a 33: 6 win and four attempts . Munster then won against defending champions Leicester Tigers, but then lost in the semifinals to Stade Toulousain , again with a single point difference. In the same year Munster won the first (and so far only) championship title.

Another narrow semi-final defeat in the Heineken Cup followed in 2004 against the London Wasps . In 2005 Munster was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Biarritz Olympique . This game took place at the Estadio Anoeta in San Sebastián and was the first encounter in the Heineken Cup on Spanish soil. In 2006 Munster was in the final for the third time: In front of over 74,000 spectators, the Irish won at the Millennium Stadium with 23:19 against Biarritz Olympique. The title defense did not succeed; Munster lost the quarter-finals in 2007 to the Welsh Llanelli Scarlets . In 2008 the second triumph in the Heineken Cup followed. In the final, which again took place in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, Munster defeated Stade Toulousain 16:13. The following season the province won the Celtic League for the second time. Munster won the third title in 2011.
