Connacht Rugby ( ir. Rugbaí Connachta) is a professional rugby union team from Connacht Province in Ireland . She plays in the international championship Pro14 and takes part in European cup competitions. The team represents the Irish Rugby Football Union Connacht Branch , one of four sub-associations of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). The home stadium is the Galway Sportsgrounds in the city of Galway .

history

The Connacht Province Association was founded in 1885 and currently consists of 19 associations. In the amateur era, the national team played against the other three provinces ( Leinster , Munster and Ulster ) for the Irish provincial championship. They won the championship title twice, making them by far the weakest team.

Since the professionalization of rugby union in the 1990s, Connacht Rugby has participated in the Celtic League, the joint championship of Ireland, Scotland and Wales . Without exception, Connacht placed in the lower half of the table and was always the worst of all four Irish teams, which is why they have never qualified for the Heineken Cup . In the second European cup competition, the European Challenge Cup , Connacht reached the quarter-finals in 1998 and the semi-finals in 2004.

In the 2008/09 season Connacht managed to beat two rivals Leinster and Munster. The 12: 6 win against Munster was the first in 22 years.

The 2015/16 season ended Connacht after the preliminary round in 2nd place. In the following semifinals, Glasgow was defeated 16:11.

Connacht then decided the final in Murrayfield in Edinburgh against Leinster with 20:10 and celebrated the first championship in the Pro12.
