Leinster Rugby ( Irish Rugbaí Laighean) is a professional rugby union team from the province of Leinster in Ireland . She plays in the international championship Pro14 and takes part in European cup competitions. The team represents the Irish Rugby Football Union Leinster Branch , one of four sub-associations of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). The home stadium is the RDS Arena in Dublin , and the Aviva Stadium is available for particularly important matches . The team's greatest successes are five Pro14 championship titles and four cup victories in the European Rugby Champions Cup and Heineken Cup .
history
The Province of Leinster Association was founded in 1875. In the amateur era, the national team played against the other three provinces ( Connacht , Munster and Ulster ) for the Irish provincial championship, winning the championship 20 times.
Since the professionalization of rugby union in the 1990s, Leinster Rugby has participated in the Celtic League, the joint championship of Ireland, Scotland and Wales , which was later expanded to include teams from Italy and South Africa for the Pro14. So far they have been champions five times: in 2002, 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2018. Leinster Rugby reached the semifinals of the European Heineken Cup in 1996, 2003 and 2006 . In 2009 the team was able to win the title in this competition for the first time, the second title followed in 2011, the third in 2012. In the 2012/13 season , Leinster had the opportunity to be the first team ever to win the title three times in a row; the team was eliminated in the preliminary round, but could win the European Challenge Cup . In 2018, in addition to the Pro 14 championship, Leinster also won the European Rugby Champions Cup , the follow-up competition to the Heineken Cup.
The traditional home ground of Leinster Rugby was Donnybrook Stadium with 6,000 seats for several decades . Since it had become too small, Leinster Rugby reached an agreement with the Royal Dublin Society in order to be able to play the home games in the RDS Arena (18,500) in the future . This happened for the first time during the Heineken Cup 2005/06 , and from the 2006/07 season also at league games. Home games with great audience interest have been played in the Aviva Stadium (51,700 seats) since 2010 .
