Nathan John Hines (born November 29, 1976 in Wagga Wagga , Australia ) is a former Scottish rugby union player who was active for ASM Clermont Auvergne and the Scottish national team . He played in the second row .

Hines began his career as a rugby league player in Australia with the North Sydney Bears . After a year he switched to rugby union and came to Scotland in 1998. With the Gala RFC he won the title in Division 2 of the Premiership and won the Scottish Cup. After a season he moved to Edinburgh Rugby .

In 2000, Hines made his debut for the Scottish national team against New Zealand . He was eligible to play for Scotland due to his father's origin, who is from Glasgow . In 2002, he scored his first attempt on the national team's North American tour and was the first Scot to be sent off in an international rugby union match against the United States . He moved to USA Perpignan in France in 2005 .

Hines played at the 2003 and 2007 World Championships . In 2009 he was nominated for the British and Irish Lions Tour to South Africa . He then moved from Perpignan to the province of Leinster . From 2011 to 2014 he played for the French club ASM Clermont Auvergne and then for the Sale Sharks . In 2015 he ended his active career.
