Edinburgh Rugby is a rugby union team from the Scottish city of Edinburgh , which plays in the international Pro14 championship and through this can qualify for the European Rugby Champions Cup . The home games are played at BT Murrayfield Stadium .
history
The rugby history of Edinburgh began in 1872 when a city duel between Edinburgh and Glasgow took place for the first time . A year earlier, England and Scotland played their first international match against each other.
With the professionalization of sport, the Scottish association SRU began to form new teams in 1995 in order to be able to be competitive in the Heineken Cup . This also included the team from Edinburgh, which was then called Edinburgh Rugby. Due to the new construction of the Murrayfield Stadium, the SRU had financial problems and reduced the four existing teams to just two. In the course of this development, the team from Edinburgh was merged with the Border Reivers and then traded as Edinburgh Reivers.
In 2001 the associations from Ireland , Scotland and Wales founded the Celtic League, to which Edinburgh also belonged. In 2002/03 they won the Scottish League, which only took place in that one year. In the meantime, the addition of Reivers was dropped and the team was called Edinburgh Rugby again. In the 2003/04 season they reached the final in the Celtic Cup, but had to admit defeat there Ulster . The best ranking so far in the Celtic League was Edinburgh in the 2008/09 season when they reached second place.
