Ulster Rugby ( Irish Rugbaí Ulaidh) is a professional rugby union team from the historic province of Ulster on the island of Ireland . She plays in the international championship Pro14 and takes part in European cup competitions. The team represents the Irish Rugby Football Union Ulster Branch , one of four sub-associations of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). Home to the Ravenhill Stadium in Belfast . The team's greatest achievements are winning the Celtic League championship title in 2006 and the European Heineken Cup in 1999.

history

The Association of the Province of Ulster was founded in 1879. In the amateur era, the team played against the other three provinces ( Connacht , Leinster , Munster ) for the Irish provincial championship and was the most successful with 26 championship titles. She also competed regularly against national teams from the southern hemisphere. For example, in 1984 she won against the Wallabies , the national team of Australia .

Since the professionalization of rugby union in the 1990s, Ulster Rugby has participated in the Celtic League, the joint championship of Ireland, Scotland and Wales . In the first three events of the Heineken Cup, the team occupied the last place in their preliminary group. But in 1999 they made it to the final, beating French club US Colomiers 21: 6 at Lansdowne Road in Dublin and becoming the first Irish team to win the European Cup. Ulster was unable to confirm this success and has not yet qualified for the quarter-finals. However, the team remained undefeated at home games from 2002 to 2005.

In the 2003/04 season, Ulster was at the top of the Celtic League for a long time, but had to be overtaken by the Llanelli Scarlets from Wales on the last day of the game . The championship of the 2005/06 season decided Ulster only in the last game against the Ospreys for themselves when David Humphreys scored a drop goal in the last minute of the game from forty meters away . This gave Ulster an additional bonus point and moved up to the top of the table before Leinster. On May 19, 2012 Ulster was in the final of the Heineken Cup for the second time , but lost to Leinster . Against the same team, Ulster also lost the Pro12 championship final six days later.
