John Sydney "Syd" Millar CBE (born May 23, 1934 in Ballymena , Northern Ireland ) is a former Irish rugby union player who played on the position of the pillar . He was active for the Irish national team and the British and Irish Lions . He represented Ireland for many years as chairman of the world association's International Rugby Board .
Millar made his debut for Ireland against France in 1958 . The following year he was nominated for a Lions tour for the first time. It was used against Australia and New Zealand . In the same year he also played for the Barbarians for the first time . As a player, two more Lions tours followed in 1962 and 1968. He ended his career in 1970, making him one of the few players to have played rugby in three decades.
In 1974, Millar coached the Lions on their tour of South Africa . The Lions never lost a game. Six years later he was back in the entourage, this time as tour manager . He played the same role with the Irish national team during the first World Cup . In the following years he worked at the world association. After the 2007 World Cup , he resigned and was appointed a member of the French Legion of Honor . The order was given to him by his successor, Bernard Lapasset .
