Bowe began rugby at the age of seven and also played Gaelic football as a child . During school he played for the selection of the Royal School Armagh as a goalkeeper , only in the Irish U21 national team he moved to the position of the outer three-quarter. In the 2003/04 season he was used by Ulster in the Magners League and put on his debut for the province equal a try . For the 2008/09 season he moved to the Welsh team Ospreys.

Further injuries and form fluctuations meant that he was not considered for the squad of Ireland for the 2007 World Cup . In the following seasons, however, he became a fundamental part of the national team and played in all five games in the Irish Grand Slam at the Six Nations 2009 .

On April 21, 2009 he was nominated by Ian McGeechan for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa . It was used in all three games in the series.
