The Southern Kings are a professional rugby union team from the South African city of Port Elizabeth . It is designed as a franchise and has been playing in the international Pro14 league since the 2016/17 season .
history
The Southern Kings were founded in 2009 by the South African Rugby Federation to take part in super rugby in the future . Their first game played the selection against the British and Irish Lions . In 2011 they took part in the Nations Cup , which was won after victories against Georgia , Portugal and Romania .
In 2013, the Southern Kings competed in Super Rugby for the first time, but had to vacate their place after one season due to the defeat in the South African relegation against the Lions . In 2016 the team returned to the league and stayed there for two seasons.
In 2017 it was decided that both the Cheetahs and the Kings will no longer participate in the Super Rugby competition. Both teams were accepted into the European league Pro12 , which became Pro14. In the first year, the team managed only one victory in 21 games.
