The Lions (dt. The lions ; formerly called the Golden Cats and Cats ) are a rugby union team from the South African city of Johannesburg . She plays in the international Super 14 league. The home games are played in the Ellis Park Stadium . The team operated under the name Cats until the 2007 season.

history

When the Super 12 tournament began in 1996, the top four South African teams from the Currie Cup qualified for the first edition. The Golden Lions were among them. In the first season they reached 10th place. In 1997, the team qualified for the second season under the name Gauteng Lions. In the end, two points were missing from a place in the semi-finals.

In 1998 the South African Association took over the franchise system and designated four teams for the Super 12. Among them were the Cats, as the Lions were still called at that time. In the first two seasons under the new name, they failed to qualify for the round of the last four. In 2000, however, the Cats made it to the semifinals, failed there because of the Brumbies . In the next season they reached the semifinals again, this time they were subject to the Sharks .

In the next seasons, the Cats stayed twice in penultimate and last rank. In 2006 the association introduced the new name "Lions" for the team from Johannesburg. Due to the continued lack of success, the Lions were replaced by the Southern Kings in the 2013 season . At the end of the season, the Lions won the relegation games against the Kings and were able to qualify for Super Rugby again.

In the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons, the Lions made it to the finals, where they lost to the Hurricanes (2016) and twice to the Crusaders .
