The 1996 season was the first edition of Super 12 , a rugby union competition with eight franchise teams from Australia and New Zealand and four provincial teams from South Africa .
The season began on March 1, 1996 and ended with the final on May 25, 1996. A total of 69 games were played, with each team playing a round robin against the 11 other teams. There followed two semi-finals and finally the final. Masters were the blues from the New Zealand city of Auckland .
Due to an internal regulation of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), the Free State provincial team from South Africa replaced the worst-placed South African provincial team after the season. This was the Western Province team .
