The Golden Lions (German: the Golden Lions ; formerly known as the Transvaal ; also known as the Emirates Lions for sponsorship reasons , Afrikaans : Goue Leeus ) are a South African rugby union team. It plays in the Currie Cup and its gaming operations are organized by the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU). The home games will be played at Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park) in Johannesburg . The association provides players for the Lions franchise team , which plays in the international Super 15 .

history

The GLRU was founded in 1889 and is one of the oldest regional associations in South Africa. The first game was played on August 31 of that year against the Griquas . In 1922 the team won the Currie Cup for the first time. It was followed by seven sole victories and one shared. In 1993 the Golden Lions won the Super 10, the predecessor of the Super 14 competition . The team at that time is considered to be the strongest selection of the Transvaals in history, as they won 22 games in a row.

In 1928, the Golden Lions managed to beat the New Zealand All Blacks . There are also five wins against the British and Irish Lions , three against the Australian Wallabies and one success each against France and England . To date, over 150 Springboks have emerged from the region.

In 1997 the association changed its name from Transvaal Rugby Union to Gauteng Lions, only to change the name to Golden Lions a year later.
