Carlos James Spencer (born October 24, 1975 in Levin , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand rugby union player who plays on the position of the connector . He was part of the All Blacks , the New Zealand national team , until 2004 . Since February 2009 he has been playing for Gloucester RFC in England .
Spencer began his career in 1992 in the Third Division at Horowhenua . After a season he moved to Auckland to play in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) and later in the Super 12 for the Blues . With these he won the title three times (1996, 1997 and 2003).
He was appointed to the national team for the first time in 1995, and his first appearance followed a year later against Argentina . In the following years he only came to sporadic missions, as Andrew Mehrtens was preferred to him. He was nominated for the squad for the 1999 World Cup , but injured himself in the run-up to the tournament and was unable to actively participate in the World Cup. It was not until the title fights in Australia in 2003 that he made his first World Cup appearance.
In 2004, Spencer struggled to maintain last year's form and lost his hard-won place on the team again to Mehrtens. The following year he took part in a game of the New Zealand Māori against the British and Irish Lions , this should also be his last appearance for a selection of New Zealand. He then moved to England to play for Northampton.
Spencer is best known for his good kick and passing game. Only three players have scored more points in the history of the All Blacks - Grant Fox , Andrew Mehrtens and Daniel Carter . He was voted into the Dream Team of the Guinness Premiership in 2006 and named Player of the Year for his club.
Spencer announced the end of his contract with the Northampton Saints on January 30, 2009 . A few days later, league rival Gloucester signed the former All Black.
