Daniel William "Dan" Carter ONZM (born March 5, 1982 in Leeston , Christchurch , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand rugby union player. He plays as a liaison half , although at the beginning of his career he was often used as an inner three quarters . With the All Blacks , the New Zealand national team, he has won the Tri Nations five times, the Bledisloe Cup six times and the Rugby Union World Cup twice .

Carter played provincial rugby for the Crusaders in the Super 14 and for Canterbury in the Air New Zealand Cup until 2008 . Carter's playful influence led the Crusaders to super rugby championship titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

Following the New Zealanders' November 2008 tour, Carter moved to France to USA Perpignan . He returned in June 2009 to participate in preparation for the 2011 World Cup, which was held in New Zealand. He is the first All Blacks player to be allowed to stay abroad and later return to the national team. In France he could only be used five times because he was injured. His club won the championship without being able to participate in the qualifying games.

Career

Juniors

Carter was a member of the Crusaders development squad in 2002, which won the title, and was the top scorer for New Zealand at the U-21 World Cup in South Africa, with 72 points (including 25 against England).

Provincial rugby

He made his provincial debut against Marlborough in 2002, and his Super 14 debut for the Crusaders a year later against the Hurricanes .

International

In 2003, Carter made his international debut at Hamilton at the age of 21 , in which he scored 20 points. He was then benched in the game against France in Christchurch , which the All Blacks won 31-23. He was also a substitute in the game against the Wallabies in Sydney, which the All Blacks won 50-21. Carter was then in New Zealand's World Cup squad for the 2003 World Cup in Australia, where he first got serious international attention. Carter was on the bench for most of the tournament, so New Zealand did not have a specialized kicker. He played in the match against Italy in Melbourne and in the victories over Canada and Tonga .

Although he has been an All Black since 2003, he only secured a regular place in the position of liaison half, displacing Carlos Spencer when the All Blacks toured Great Britain and France in 2004. Since the end of the Tri Nations in 2004 , he played as inner three quarters. After Carter's excellent performance in the second international game of the All Blacks against the British and Irish Lions , at the Lions Tour in New Zealand in 2005, he was seen as the next big star in world rugby. Carter scored two tries, five penalties, and four raises. He finished the game with 33 points, shattering the previous All-Black record of 18 points in a Lions game (Carter's second half with a total of 22 points would have been enough to break the record).

In August 2006, Carter landed a penalty against South Africa from 62 meters between the bars. It was one of the longest kicks ever recorded during an international match. His 25 international attempts are a record for a connection half of the All Blacks. In the modern rugby scene it is considered to be one of the best connectors.
