The Canadian national rugby union team represents Canada internationally in the sport of rugby union . It is the World Association International Rugby Board (IRB) in the second strength class (second tier) divided. The first international match was played against Japan in 1932. The team has always been able to qualify for the World Cup and achieved their best result in 1991 when they reached the quarter-finals. She has been participating in the annual Churchill Cup since 2003 . The responsible association is called Rugby Canada .

history

In 1874 the first international rugby game in North America took place in Cambridge (Massachusetts) between the universities of McGill and Harvard . The two universities still face each other every November and play for the Covo Cup according to the original rugby rules. The Westmount Rugby Football Club from Montreal, founded in 1876, is the oldest non-university club in the country .

In 1884 the Canadian Rugby Football Union was founded . In 1909, the fourth Earl Gray founded the Gray Cup for the best rugby team in Canada. During this time, however, Canadian rugby began to differ significantly from traditional British rugby and gradually evolved into Canadian football after various rule changes . Today the Gray Cup is the championship trophy of the Canadian Football League .

During the First and Second World War, the rugby match operation was set, but in the interwar period, the sport experienced a renaissance of sorts. 1919 played a selection of the Canadian Army for the King's Cup against selections of the various British armed forces, as well as the Expeditionary Corps of the Dominons New Zealand , South African Union and Australia . In 1929 the association was re-established under the name Rugby Union of Canada and in 1932 the first international game took place in which the Canadians lost just outside of Japan.

Canada was one of the 16 countries invited by the IRB to the first Rugby Union World Cup in 1987 . In their very first World Cup game, the Canadians beat Tonga 37-4, but lost the other group games against Ireland and Wales. At the 1991 World Cup , they reached the quarter-finals with wins against Fiji and Romania and a loss against France. There they were beaten by the New Zealanders, however.

In November 1993, the Canadians won sensationally against Wales and in June 1994 against France. At the 1995 World Cup , however, only Romania could be defeated, and Namibia four years later . At the 2003 World Cup they could only win once, against Tonga. At the 2007 World Cup it was only enough to draw against Japan.

Canada was the first national team to qualify for the 2011 World Cup alongside the pre-qualified teams . This was achieved by defeating the United States two years before the start of the tournament. At the World Cup in New Zealand, despite a 25:20 win over Tonga and a draw with Japan, only fourth place in Group A could be achieved. Canada therefore had to qualify again for the 2015 World Cup. At the finals in England they delivered the worst tournament performance so far and lost all four games.

Stages

The national team does not currently have a permanent home stadium and therefore plays its games in different locations all over the country. The BMO Field in Toronto has been proposed as the national stadium. However, the intention is to use the Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium in Vancouver , which is still in the planning phase, in the future . Thus the national team would have its base in the rugby stronghold of British Columbia .
