history
India's history in rugby union is quite young. The first international match of a national team did not take place until 1998, even though the association had been founded 30 years earlier. The game against Singapore ended in a disappointing 85-0 defeat. It took a full six years and 14 games before the team was able to leave the field as winners for the first time after a clear victory over Pakistan .
The team then signed up to qualify for the 2007 Rugby Union World Cup . After a defeat at the beginning against Kazakhstan and a surprising win against Malaysia , which had to be defeated two years earlier, they did not get past a draw in the decisive game against Guam , who played for their first international match, and were eliminated in qualifying early off.
India has been participating in the Asian Five Nations since 2008 . Initially, the team was placed in the second division, where it celebrated a historic 92-0 victory in the first edition against Pakistan. However, due to the previous defeat against Thailand , India was eliminated in qualifying for the 2011 World Cup .
