The Russian national rugby union team represents Russia in the sport of rugby union . She is nicknamed "The Bears" and belongs to the third tier . In 1992, a Russian national rugby team played an international match for the first time. Previously, the team played as part of the Soviet Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States . The Russians qualified for the 2011 World Cup and are taking part in a World Cup for the first time.

history

In 1936 the Rugby Union Federation of the Soviet Union was founded. Until 1991 the Russian team was part of this association. For two years she was a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States and lost all four completed games. On June 6, 1992, the Russian national team played the first official game in its history against the Barbarians , which was won by 27:23. The team beat Belgium , Germany , Georgia and Poland until November 1993 , before the team had to admit defeat to Italy at 19:30.

Russia has been taking part in the European Rugby Championship since 1992 and even won the title in 1995. At the European Nations Cup, which was introduced in 1999, the Russians came third twice. In 2001 and 2002 they only had to admit defeat to Romania and Georgia.

In qualifying for the 2003 World Cup , the Russian team was even excluded because it had three unauthorized South African players. The team missed the World Cup in France as the bears were beaten by Italy and Portugal . Against Italy there was the biggest defeat in the history of Russian rugby. In the Slava Stadium the Russian bears lost 7:67. In Lisbon , the Russians just failed with 26:23, the Portuguese later qualified for their first World Cup participation.

In the 2006/08 season the Russian team showed a clear improvement, beating Romania 22:11 in Bucharest and 12: 8 in Krasnodar and ultimately finishing second in the European Nations Cup for the first time .

In the 2008/10 season , the Russians achieved three consecutive victories against Spain in Moscow, abroad in Lisbon and Bucharest, so the Russian team climbed to 17th place in the world rankings . After a defeat against Georgia, three more victories and a draw against Romania were celebrated in Sochi . The second comparison against Georgia was lost again. As a result, the Russians qualified alongside Georgia two game days before the end of the tournament for the 2011 World Cup and took part in a World Cup for the first time. In the preliminary round group C , however, no game could be won, only in the 6:13 defeat against the USA there was a bonus point.

In 2018 Russia qualified for the Rugby Union World Cup 2019 after 30 and 40 points respectively had been deducted from Romania and Spain due to the use of ineligible foreign players.
