The Russian men's national volleyball team is a selection of the best Russian players who represent the Russian Volleyball Federation (Vserossijskaja Federazija Woleibola, Всероссийская Федерация Волейбола) at international tournaments and internationals. The Russian national team is the successor to the Soviet national team , which was one of the most successful teams in its time. She became vice world champion in 2002 and Olympic champion in 2012. She also won two European championships, two World Cups, three times the World League and the two previous editions of the Nations League.

history

World championships

The Russians have so far been less successful at volleyball world championships than the six-time world champion Soviet Union. They finished seventh at the 1994 World Cup . Four years later , they finished fifth. In 2002 they lost to Brazil in the final and won their first medal. At the 2006 World Cup , they came in seventh place. In 2010 they won the game for fifth place. They achieved the same result at the 2014 tournament . The 2018 World Cup ended for her in the third round and thus also in fifth place.

Olympic games

At the Olympic Games in 1992 , the Russians competed as a United Team and came in seventh place. In 1996 in Atlanta they lost the bronze game against Yugoslavia . European championships

At the European Championships in 1993 , the Russians succeeded the defending champions Soviet Union and came in third. In 1995 and 1997 they finished fifth. In 1999 they lost the final against Italy. The tournaments in 2001 and 2003 they finished again in third place. At the EM 2005 they had to admit defeat in the final against Italy. Two years later they lost the final against Spain in front of their home crowd . In 2009 and 2011 they missed the medal ranks as fourth. At the 2013 tournament , the Russians won European championships for the first time since the end of the Soviet Union by beating Italy. In 2015 , the duel was already in the quarter-finals, with the defending champion retired and finished in sixth place. At the 2017 European Championship , the Russians won the final against the German team . The 2019 tournament ended for them in the quarter-finals against Slovenia .

World cup

Russia did not take part in the World Cup in 1995 . At the 1999 tournament , the Russians won the final against Cuba . After another break in 2003, they lost in the 2007 final against Brazil. In 2011 they won their second title against Poland . In 2015 , they finished fourth behind Poland. They finished the World Cup 2019 in sixth place.

In the first edition of the Nations League 2018 , the Russians won the tournament in the final against France . In 2019 they defended their title in the final against the USA.

World league

The United Team reached sixth place in the 1992 World League . In 1993 the Russians lost to Brazil in the final. In the next few years they finished sixth and fourth and third twice. In 1998 they lost the final against Cuba and after a fourth place in 1999 there was the next defeat in the final against Italy. In 2001 the Russians came third again. In 2002 they won the title for the first time with a win against hosts Brazil. A seventh place in 2003 was followed by two years without a world league. When they returned in 2006, the Russians came in third. In 2007 they had to admit defeat in the final against Brazil. Then they came third twice. In 2010, Brazil was more successful in the final. In 2011, the Russians took revenge. In 2012 they missed the final round and achieved eighth place, the worst result in this competition. However, they prevailed again in the final against Brazil. In the last four editions of the competition until 2017, they finished fifth, eighth, seventh and sixth.

European League

At the premiere of the Europa League in 2004, the Russians lost to the Czech Republic in the final . In 2005 they won the competition in the final against Finland .
