European men's volleyball championship 1997

The 1997 European men's volleyball championship took place in the Netherlands from September 6th to 14th . The games were played in Eindhoven and 's-Hertogenbosch . The hosts won the title for the first time.

mode

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The two best teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The table third and fourth played for places five to eight.

qualification

The Netherlands were set as hosts. The best four teams from the 1995 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Italy as the defending champion, the second FR Yugoslavia , the fourth Bulgaria and the fifth Russia .

24 teams played for seven more places. In the first round, 23 teams competed in two groups of four and three groups of five, in which they competed against every opponent at home and away. The group winners qualified for the finals. The runners-up played together with Austria, which also hosted the qualifying round in Vienna , “everyone against everyone”. The top four teams in this group played for the last two places in the finals in the semi-finals and finals.
