1991 European men's volleyball championship

The 1991 European men's volleyball championship took place in Germany from September 7th to 15th . The hosts competed with a team for the first time after reunification . The games took place in Berlin , Karlsruhe and Hamburg . The Soviet Union won the title for the twelfth time.

mode

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The two best teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The third and fourth place in the table played for places five to eight, the remaining teams for places nine to twelve.

qualification

Germany was set as the host. The top three teams from the 1989 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Italy as defending champions, the second Sweden and the third Netherlands .

Twenty teams played in four groups for eight more places. The two best teams in each group qualified for the finals.
