European men's volleyball championship 1987

The 1987 European men's volleyball championship took place in Belgium from September 25th to October 3rd . Germany was not represented among the twelve participants. The games took place in Gent , Auderghem / Oudergem and Genk . The Soviet Union became European champions for the ninth time in a row.

mode

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The two best teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The third and fourth place in the table played for places five to eight, the remaining teams for places nine to twelve.

qualification

Belgium was set to host. The top three teams from the 1985 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the second Czechoslovakia and the third France .

22 teams played in four groups for eight more places. The two best teams in each group qualified for the finals. In Group A, Yugoslavia and hosts Spain prevailed in Cádiz . In Group B, which played in Dunaújváros , the hosts Hungary and the GDR failed to the Netherlands and Bulgaria . From Group C, which was held in Espinho , Italy and Sweden qualified ahead of the German team and hosts Portugal .
