European Women's Volleyball Championship 2003

The 2003 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in Ankara from September 20th to 28th . Poland won the title for the first time in the final against the hosts. Germany finished third, while Russia missed a medal for the first time in European Championship history.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The third and fourth played for places five to eight.

Germany played with Atika Bouagaa , Christina Benecke , Cornelia Dumler , Christiane Fürst , Angelina Grün , Tanja Hart , Olessya Kulakova , Kathy Radzuweit , Julia Schlecht , Anika Schulz , Judith Sylvester and Kerstin Tzscherlich . The coach was Lee Hee-wan .

qualification

The Turkey was set to host. The top three teams from the 2001 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Russia as the defending champion, the second Italy and the third Bulgaria .

Twelve teams played for eight more places in the finals. In three groups of four they competed against every opponent at home and away. The two best teams in each group and the two best thirds in the group qualified.
