European women's volleyball championship 1995

The 1995 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in the Netherlands from September 23 to October 1 . The games were played in Arnhem and Groningen . The hosts were the first Western European team to win the title.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The third and fourth played for places five to eight.

qualification

The Netherlands were set as hosts. The seven best teams from the 1993 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Russia as the defending champion, the second Czech Republic , the third Ukraine , the fourth Italy , the fifth Germany , the sixth Croatia and the eighth Belarus .

Seventeen other teams played for four more places in the finals. In the first qualifying round, Portugal and Slovakia met on two legs. The Slovaks won 3-0 in Esmoriz on October 30, 1994 and 3-1 in Bratislava on November 26th . Together with fifteen other teams, four groups of four, in which each team competed at home and away against the three opponents. The group winners reached the finals.
