1985 European Women's Volleyball Championship

The 1985 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in the Netherlands from September 29th to October 6th . The games were played in Arnhem , Beverwijk , Enschede and Leeuwarden . The Soviet Union won the title for the eleventh time and the GDR took second place.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into three groups of four in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up were combined into one group in the final round. In the mode “everyone against everyone” they determined the tournament winner. The remaining teams played for positions seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round.

qualification

The Netherlands were set as hosts. The top five teams from the 1983 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the GDR as defending champions, the second Soviet Union , the third Hungary , the fourth Bulgaria and the Federal Republic as fifth.

Six other teams made it to the finals through qualifying tournaments that were held in May. In Group A, which played in Mulhouse , France and Italy beat Belgium , Norway and Turkey . At the Group B tournament in Viana do Castelo , Czechoslovakia and Poland prevailed against Yugoslavia , Spain , England and Portugal . Group C is qualified Romania and Greece .
