Research center for molecular biology and medicine
The Research Center for Molecular Biology and Medicine (FZMM) was in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) the association of biologically and medically oriented institutions in the research community of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . It was created in 1971 as part of the academy's reform, which also led to the establishment of several central institutes. The seat of the research center, whose institutes together had around 4,000 employees, was Berlin-Buch . The monthly meetings of the FZMM director with the institute directors to clarify content-related and organizational issues were the most important committee of the research center. The directors of the research center, Werner Scheler from 1971 to 1979 and Günter Pasternak from 1979 to 1984 , also worked on various other internal and state bodies.
The FZMM included the three central institutes for cardiovascular research , cancer research and molecular biology in Berlin-Buch as well as the central institute for nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbrücke , the central institute for genetics and crop plant research in Gatersleben , the central institute for microbiology and experimental therapy in Jena , the Institute for Biochemistry of Plants in Halle , the Zoological Research Center in the Berlin Zoo and, from 1976, the Institute for Active Substance Research in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde . In 1984 the FZMM was renamed the Research Area Biosciences and Medicine , which also included the Institute for Neurobiology and Brain Research in Magdeburg , founded three years earlier . In 1985 Manfred Ringpfeil took over the management of the research area, which consisted of the scientific fields of life sciences and medicine .
In April 1989 the organizational division of the research area into the two scientific areas took place. In line with a change in the statutes of the academy, Manfred Ringpfeil (life sciences) and Stephan Tanneberger (medicine) were appointed for these secretaries.
