Günter Pasternak

Günter Pasternak (born  October 5, 1932 in Berlin ) is a German doctor and immunologist . From 1984 to 1991 he was director of the Central Institute for Molecular Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

Life

Günter Pasternak was born in Berlin in 1932 and studied medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1959 and also received his habilitation in 1966 . From 1973 he was a professor at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . After initially being the head of the "Experimental and Clinical Immunology" department at the Central Institute for Cancer Research at the Academy in Berlin-Buch , from 1979 to 1984 he was director of the Research Center for Molecular Biology and Medicine , the association of bioscientific and medical academy institutes. From 1982 to 1990 he was also a member of the Research Council of the GDR .

From 1984 he succeeded the pathologist Karl-Wolfgang Zschiesche as director of the Central Institute for Molecular Biology (ZIM), also located in Berlin-Buch . He remained director of the ZIM until its successor institution was founded, the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine , which was established in 1992 . He then worked in the field of leukemia research at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg until 1999 , before retiring shortly before his 67th birthday.

Awards

Günter Pasternak was from 1975 a corresponding and from 1979 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In addition, he was appointed a foreign member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1988 . He was awarded the Rudolf Virchow Prize in 1973 and the GDR National Prize in 1980 and 1985 .
