Manfred Ringpfeil

Manfred Gustav Ringpfeil (born  July 12, 1932 in Wermsdorf ) is a German chemist and biotechnologist . From 1969 to 1987 he was director of the Institute for Technical Chemistry and Biotechnology of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin, which later became the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In addition, from 1985 to 1989 he headed the Biosciences and Medicine Research Department and then the Academy's Biosciences Department.

Life

Manfred Ringpfeil was born in Wermsdorf in 1932 and , after studying chemistry , which he completed from 1951 to 1955, received his doctorate in 1958 at the University of Leipzig with a thesis on the synthesis and extraction of dextran . In the same year he became head of research at VEB Serumwerk in Bernburg . In 1959 he moved to the Institute for Process Engineering of Organic Chemistry in Leipzig , part of the Research Foundation of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin , where he later also served as a department head. In addition, he worked as a lecturer for technical microbiology at the Magdeburg University of Technology .

From 1969 to 1987 he was then director of the newly created Leipzig Academy Institute for Technical Chemistry and the Institute for Biotechnology that emerged from it in 1985 through restructuring. In 1970 he was appointed professor by the academy and in 1985 took over as director of the research area biosciences and medicine as head of the association of biologically and medically oriented academy institutes. With the division of the research area into two independent scientific areas, he became secretary of the scientific area of ​​life sciences.

After German reunification , he was the managing director of a biotechnology company based in Berlin-Adlershof .

Awards

Manfred Ringpfeil was from 1975 a corresponding and from 1981 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In 1987 he received the GDR National Prize .
