The Italian national volleyball team for women is a selection of the best Italian women players, who represent the FIPAV ( Federazione Italiana Pallavolo ) in international tournaments and internationals.

history

World championships

Italy took part in a volleyball world championship for the first time in 1978 and was eliminated in the preliminary round. Even four years later , the tournament was over after the first group stage. At the 1986 World Cup , the Italians made it into the top ten for the first time. In 1990 and 1994 they did not get past the preliminary round again. At the 1998 tournament , they improved to fifth place. In 2002 in Germany they became world champions for the first time in the final against the USA . At the 2006 World Cup they finished fourth and in 2010 they finished fifth. At the 2014 World Cup in their own country they narrowly missed the medal ranks with a defeat against Brazil . In 2018 in Japan they reached their second World Cup final, but had to admit defeat to Serbia .

Olympic games

Italy took part in the 2000 Olympics for the first time, finishing ninth. At the 2004 tournament, the Italians lost to Cuba in the quarterfinals . In 2008 in Beijing they also reached the quarter-finals, which they lost this time against the eventual finalists USA. In 2012 in London they were eliminated in the same round against South Korea . The 2016 tournament ended for them in the preliminary round. They secured their starting place for the 2020 Olympic Games at an international qualifying tournament in Catania .

European championships

When the Italians first took part in a European volleyball championship in 1951, they did not get past sixth and last place. After that, they were missing three times. In 1967 there was an eleventh place and four years later the Italians were eighth in their own country. After ninth place in 1975 and eleventh place in 1977, they missed another EM. In the tournaments from 1981 to 1985, they rose from eighth to fifth place before they were sixth in 1987. In 1989 they won the bronze medal and two years later they lost the game for third place against the German team . This was followed by another fourth and two sixth places. When the European Championship took place in Italy again in 1999, the hosts finished third again. At the 2001 European Championship they were in the final for the first time, which they lost to Russia. After a sixth place in 2003 they reached the final again in 2005, in which they were defeated by Poland . At the 2007 tournament , Italy became European champions for the first time by beating Serbia in the final. In 2009 they managed to defend their title against the Netherlands . In 2011 they came in fourth place as hosts. With places six, seven and five, the next three tournaments followed somewhat poorer results. At the EM 2019 , the Italians prevailed in the game for third place against Poland.

World cup

The Italians took part in the World Cup for the first time in 1999 and finished in seventh place. In 2003 they came in fourth. The tournament in 2007 they won the final against Brazil . In 2011 they defended their title with a win against the USA. Italy did not take part in the World Cup in 2015 and 2019.

Nations League

In the Nations League 2018 , Italy narrowly missed making it into the final round as sixth in the preliminary round. At the 2019 tournament , they lost both games in the final round.

World Grand Prix

When Italy first participated, Italy finished eighth in the 1994 World Grand Prix . In 1997 the Italians returned after a two-year break and finished seventh. They then rose to places five and four, before coming back to seventh place in 2000. Then they were absent for another two years. In 2003, they reached fifth place as hosts. In 2004 and 2005 they lost the final against Brazil . In the next three years they finished third, as well as after a year break at the 2010 tournament. After finishing seventh in 2011, they alternated between tenth and fifth place in the following years, before finishing eighth in 2016. In the last edition of the competition, they lost another final against Brazil in 2017.

Awards

The Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport voted the national women's team in 2002 and 2009 " Italy's Team of the Year ".
