The Cuban national volleyball team for women is a selection of the best Cuban players that the Federación Cubana de Voleibol represents at international tournaments and internationals.

history

World championships

Cuba first took part in a volleyball world championship in 1970 and finished eighth. At the following tournament, the Cubans climbed to seventh place. In 1978 they became world champions for the first time in the final against Japan. After a fifth place in 1982 they reached the final again in 1986, where they were defeated by China . In 1990 there was a fourth place. In 1994 the Cubans won their second World Cup title against hosts Brazil , which they defended against China four years later. At the tournaments in 2002 , 2006 and 2010 there were worse results with places five, seven and twelve.

Olympic games

In 1972 in Munich , Cuba took part in the Olympic tournament for the first time and took sixth place. At the 1976 and 1980 Games , the Cubans finished fifth. Her success story began twelve years later. In the tournaments in 1992 (against Russia ), 1996 (against China) and 2000 (again against Russia) they became Olympic champions three times in a row. In 2004 in Athens they won bronze. In 2008 in Beijing , the Cubans missed a medal with a 3-1 defeat in the game for third place against the hosts.

NORCECA championships

At the first NORCECA championship in 1969 and 1971 in their own country, Cuba was defeated in the final against Mexico. In 1973 the Cubans became NORCECA champions for the first time against Canada and defended the title three times in a row against the USA . In 1981 and 1983 they failed in the final against the same opponent. Then they won the title eight times in a row (seven times against the USA, once against Canada). From 2001 to 2005 the USA was again more successful in the final. In 2007, Cuba won its 13th NORCECA title.

World cup

At the first edition of the World Cup in 1973, Cuba finished fifth. In 1977 the Cuban women reached the final against Japan. After sixth place in 1981, they were again in the final in 1985 and lost to China. They then won the competition four times in a row from 1989 to 1999 (against the Soviet Union, China, Brazil and Russia). In 2003 and 2007 there were places six and four.

World Grand Prix

In the 1993 final against China, Cuba was the first ever World Grand Prix winner . This was followed by two third places and two defeats in the final against Brazil and Russia. After finishing third in 1998 and fifth in 1999, they won their second title against Russia in 2000. Subsequently, the results were worse with fourth and seventh place. In 2003 the competition ended in the preliminary round. From 2004 to 2006, Cuba was fourth. In 2007 it was only enough for seventh place. In the 2008 competition, the Cubans were only beaten by Brazil .
