The United States women's national volleyball team is a selection of the United States ' top female players , who represent the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA) in international tournaments and internationals. The Americans became world champions in 2014 after achieving very different results. They won three silver medals at the Olympic Games. There are also some victories at the World Grand Prix and the Nations League. At the continental championships, the USA is the most successful team next to Cuba.

history

World Championship

The United States finished ninth when they first competed in a World Volleyball Championship in 1952 and climbed to sixth at the next tournament in 1960. In 1962 they were missing again. At the 1967 World Cup they were only defeated by hosts Japan in the final . In 1970 they were eliminated without a win after the preliminary round and four years later they came in twelfth place. Things went better in 1978 with fifth place. At the 1982 World Cup, the US women finished third. In 1986, however, it was only enough for tenth place before the team won bronze again in 1990. In 1994 the USA lost the game for fifth place against the German team . Four years later, they didn't win a set in the preliminary round of the World Cup. In Germany in 2002, the United States reached a World Cup final for the second time and lost to Italy . After a ninth place at the 2006 World Cup , they had to admit defeat to the Japanese at the 2010 tournament in the game for third place. In 2014 in Italy they beat China in the final and became world champions for the first time. As the defending champions, they finished fifth at the 2018 World Cup .

Olympic games

At the first Olympic tournaments in Tokyo in 1964 and Mexico in 1968 , the United States came in fifth and eighth. After that, they missed the next three tournaments. In 1984 in Los Angeles they were only defeated by China in the final in front of a home crowd. The 1988 Games ended for her in seventh place. In 1992 in Barcelona they won the bronze medal. In 1996 in Atlanta they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Cuba despite their home advantage. In the 2000 Games they lost the bronze game against Brazil and four years later they had to admit defeat to the same opponent in the quarterfinals. In 2008 in Beijing, the Americans were only defeated in the final against Brazil and won the silver medal for the second time. 2012 in London there was the same final and the US team lost again to the South Americans. The 2016 tournament ended with a bronze medal for the team. The USA secured their starting place for the 2020 Olympic Games at an international qualifying tournament in Shreveport .

NORCECA championship

At the premiere of the NORCECA championship in 1969, the United States took third place. They didn't finish in the top four two years later, but in 1973 they finished third again. In 1975 they were only defeated as hosts in the Cuba final. This began a series of finals between these two opponents that lasted until 1987. The United States prevailed in 1981 and again as host in 1983. After a third place for the Americans in 1989, the duel against Cuba continued. In the 1990s, the island team won all five finals, then the US won three times before Cuba succeeded again in 2007. In 2009, the United States came fourth. In 2011, 2013 and 2015 they won three times in the final against the Dominican Republic . In the 2019 final they were defeated by the same opponent in the tie-break.

World cup

In the first two editions of the World Cup , the United States finished sixth in 1973 and seventh in 1977 . In 1981 they lost the game for third place against the Soviet Union . After that, they were absent from two tournaments. In 1991 they were again fourth behind the Soviet team. After a seventh place in 1995 , they achieved ninth place in 1999, their worst result in this competition. At the 2003 tournament they came third. The same result came four years later . At the 2011 World Cup , the USA reached the final, which they lost to Italy. In 2015 they came third again. In 2019 they played their second final and this time China had to admit defeat.

Nations League

The Americans won the 2018 Nations League in the final against Turkey . At the 2019 tournament they defended their title in the final against Brazil.

World Grand Prix

In the first tournaments of the World Grand Prix , the USA finished seventh in 1993 and sixth in 1994. They won the 1995 Grand Prix in the final against Brazil. In 1996 there was a fifth place and in the following two years the Americans came in eighth place, making them last. After a year break, they returned in 2000 in sixth place. With a final victory over China in 2001 they won the competition for the second time. As defending champions, they finished sixth again in 2002. In 2003 and 2004 they each achieved third place. From 2005 to 2007, US women ranked seventh and eighth. In 2008 they rose to fourth place. In 2009 they missed the finals with a ninth place. From 2010 to 2012 they won three finals in a row against Brazil. In the next two years, they did worse in sixth and seventh. In 2015, they defeated Russia as hosts in the final. A year later they had to admit defeat to the Brazilians. The last edition in 2017 they finished in sixth place.
