2010 Women's Volleyball World Championship

The 2010 Women's Volleyball World Championship took place in Japan from October 29th to November 14th . Russia became world champions again with a 3-2 win in the final against Brazil .

mode

The tournament began with a preliminary round in four groups of six teams each. The draw took place in Tokyo on November 24, 2009 . The four best teams in each group reached the second round, which was held in two groups of eight participants each. The six best teams in each group of the second round play the placement games for places one to twelve.

There were two points for a win, one for a defeat, and in the event of a tie, the ball point quotient decided the placement.

The placement games took place in Tokyo on November 13th and 14th .

Germany finished seventh and played with Kathleen Weiß , Heike Beier , Maren Brinker , Lenka Dürr , Denise Hanke , Christiane Fürst , Corina Ssuschke , Saskia Hippe , Margareta Kozuch , Anne Matthes , Kathy Radzuweit , Nadja Schaus , Lisa Thomsen and Kerstin Tzscherlich . The coach was Giovanni Guidetti .

qualification

The continental qualifiers were played from December 2008 to July 2009.

Europe

In addition to defending champion Russia , eight other participants from Europe were determined. In the first round there were three groups of four. The group winners Hungary , Israel and Moldova as well as the group runner-up Slovenia reached the second round, which was held in two groups of four and two groups of five. From the groups of four, two teams progressed, namely Belarus and Azerbaijan as well as Croatia and Belgium . In the other groups, the first three places, which were occupied by Bulgaria , the Czech Republic and Romania, as well as Spain , France and Slovenia, were sufficient . In the third round there were four groups with four teams each, of which the group winners and runners-up qualified for Japan. Italy and the Czech Republic prevailed against Belarus and Bulgaria; Serbia and Croatia were successful against Romania and Spain; the Turkey and Poland occupied the first places ahead of Belgium and France. The German team became group winners ahead of the Netherlands , Azerbaijan and Slovenia.

Africa

The African qualification, which was about two places, started with a group of four and a group of five in the second round. Cameroon and Senegal as well as Mauritius and South Africa reached the third round with two groups of four, the winners of which qualified for the tournament in Japan. Kenya prevailed against Tunisia , Senegal and Cameroon. Algeria was successful against Egypt , Mauritius and South Africa.

Asia

In the first round of the Asian qualification, in which the teams battled for four places next to hosts Japan , started with a group of four. New Zealand and Fiji reached the second round with a group of three and four. Only Bangladesh was eliminated there. The third round was played in two groups of four, from which the two best teams qualified for the World Cup. China and Thailand won against Uzbekistan and Fiji. South Korea and Kazakhstan took first places ahead of Taiwan and New Zealand.

North and Central America

The qualification of the NORCECA association, to which six places were allocated, began in the first round with a group of five and a group of four, the winners of which reached Bermuda and St. Lucia in the second round. There were three groups of six from each of which three teams progressed: Trinidad / Tobago, Netherlands Antilles and US Virgin Islands; Barbados, Jamaica and Bahamas; Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama. The group winners of the four groups of four in the third round ( Cuba , USA , Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico ) qualified directly for Japan. The runners-up played a playoff round in which Canada and Costa Rica prevailed against Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago .

South America

The South American qualification, in which it was a question of two places, started in the second round with a group of six. Argentina and Venezuela reached the third round. In a group of four they lost to Brazil and Peru .
