Yekaterina Alexandrowna Gamowa ( Russian Екатерина Александровна Гамова ; born October 17, 1980 in Chelyabinsk , Soviet Union ) is a Russian volleyball player .
She was a member of the Russian national team . With this she won silver at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and 2004 in Athens, as well as the title at the 2006 and 2010 World Championships in Japan. She has been playing for VK Dynamo Kazan since 2010 . With a height of 2.02 m, she is one of the tallest athletes in the world. She has shoe size 49 and weighs 80 kg.
Career
At the age of nine, Ekaterina Gamowa first began to play volleyball in the Chelyabinsk home club . Her first trainer was her aunt Lyubov Gamowa. Joining the Metar association enabled her to earn money from volleyball for the first time at the age of 14. In 1998 she became a member of the Uralochka, under the coach Nikolai Karpol , which is why she moved to Yekaterinburg . With her debut in the Russian national volleyball team in 1999, Jekaterina saw her first successes on an international level. In the same year, the Russian women won the European Championship, the Grand Prix and took silver in the World Cup.
In 2000 they won silver in the Grand Prix and at the Olympic Games in Sydney. In the following year, they also achieved silver at the European Championships and the World Cup. They also won bronze in the Grand Prix that same year. The Russian national volleyball team took bronze from the 2002 World Cup and gold from the Grand Prix. They achieved further success with a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The Russian women were able to call the world championship title their own again in 2006 after 16 years. After Yekaterina had devoted several years to the Uralochka, she moved to VK Dynamo Moscow in 2004 , in whose team, trained by Leonid Nikolajewitsch Zaiko , she fulfilled the task of captain. For the 2009/10 season she moved to the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Istanbul and won the Turkish championship with this. In addition, she reached the final of the Volleyball Champions League with Fenerbahçe , in which she lost 3-2 with her team Volley Bergamo . Since 2010, Gamowa has been back in Russia for VK Dynamo Kazan , with whom she was Russian champion three times in a row and won the cup twice.
Private
Ekaterina grew up in a purely female household. Since her father left the family at an early age, "Katja" was raised by her mother, aunt and grandmother. Since she ultimately lost her mother too, her circle of friends has become family for her. Her closest friends of the volleyball team are Anastasia Belikova and Tanja Gorschkova .
It was noticed early on that she was the tallest among her peers. Today she is one of the greatest athletes in the world. At the age of 19, she met her long-term friend in her hometown of Chelyabinsk, with whom she currently lives in Moscow. After her volleyball career, Ekaterina wants to work in the field of journalism. She started her studies in 2006.
