The 2006 World Volleyball Championship took place in Japan from October 31 to December 3 . First, the women's competition was held. Russia became world champions with a 3-2 win in the final against Brazil . The men's competitions began on November 17th. The reigning Olympic champion Brazil won the tournament with a clear 3-0 victory in the final against Poland . The German national team was represented in both competitions. The men reached ninth place after a very successful preliminary round and an unsuccessful intermediate round with two wins in the placement games.
mode
The mode was the same for women and men. The tournament began with a preliminary round in four groups (A – D) with six teams each. The draw took place on November 29, 2005 in Tokyo . The winner of a group game received two points, the loser one point. In the event of a tie, the quotient of the ball points (BPQ) decided the placement. The best four teams in each group reached the second round. There two groups of eight (E and F) were formed, whereby the results from the direct duels of the first round were adopted. The six best teams from each group reached the placement games.
Women
game schedule
First round
In Group A there was a direct duel between the two best teams on the first day of the match. In the Asian duel, Taiwan prevailed against Japan . In the following games, the two teams did not give up any more points. Poland only lost against these opponents and reached 3rd place in the group. With South Korea , another representative from the Far East qualified for the second round. Costa Rica and Kenya , on the other hand, had no chance. The Central Americans only won the direct duel of the underdogs, the Africans lost in all five games.
The German team started in Group B with a sovereign victory against the Dominican Republic in the World Cup. In the second game against Mexico , Giovanni Guidetti's team , who coached the women for the first time in a major tournament, also had an undisputed 3-0 victory. Against the eventual group winners Russia there was the first defeat of the DVV selection. With the 3-0 win against Azerbaijan , the women were successful again. A day later, the German team caused a surprise with a 3-1 win against reigning Olympic champion China , which helped volleyball gain unfamiliar media attention. The Asians had already lost the game against Russia and ended up in third place behind Germany. Azerbaijan qualified as the fourth team with two wins for the second round. The players from the Caribbean could only record one victory in the underdog duel against Mexico.
In Group C , dominated Brazil . The World Cup favorite only gave two sets against the Netherlands . Behind them was the USA team , which clearly lost 3-0 to the South Americans, but won all other games. Third was the Oranje team, which only lost to the favorites in the fifth set. 4th place went to Puerto Rico with two wins. Kazakhstan was able to land a few respectable successes, but had to say goodbye after the first round as did Cameroon, which qualified for a World Cup for the first time .
In Group D , the team from Serbia and Montenegro , who played together despite the political separation, surprised with a 3-1 win against defending champions Italy right from the start . The players from the Balkans finally prevailed as the unbeaten group winners over the southern Europeans. The three-time world champion Cuba took third place. In addition, Turkey could qualify for the next round. The outsiders Peru and Egypt were eliminated after the preliminary round.

Second round
Italy and Serbia-Montenegro finished first in Group E with equal points . While the defending champions remained unbeaten this time, the team from the Balkans lost to Japan and only prevailed against Taiwan in the fifth set. All teams from group D were able to qualify for the next round, while the World Cup was over for South Korea and Poland.
For the German team, the second round in Group F began with an unfortunate defeat. Three days after the surprising success against China, the women of the DVV against the Netherlands could not use an 11: 5 lead and a match point in the fifth set and lost 2: 3. A day later, despite the 3-0 win, they did not play well against outsiders Puerto Rico. A clear 3-0 defeat followed against the favorites Brazil. In the last game against the USA, the Germans again awarded a match point and thus missed the goal of at least 8th place before the World Cup. The later finalists Brazil and Russia dominated this group. The Netherlands secured third place with a 3-2 win against China, which also ended up ahead of Germany because of the slightly better quotient. The USA also qualified for the next round, while Azerbaijan and Puerto Rico were eliminated.

Men
game schedule
First round
In Group A , the Poles , who started as the secret favorites, won through with ease. The Eastern Europeans did not drop a single set in their five games. The host's team secured second place. However, the Japanese were defeated in the Asian duel against the Chinese who were eliminated after the preliminary round . Argentina and Puerto Rico also qualified for the next round. The South Americans lost the direct duel against the Caribbean team, which was equivalent in points and sets, but benefited from the ball point quotient and thus achieved third place. In addition to China, Egypt , which managed their only win against Puerto Rico, had to say goodbye after the first round.
In Group B , the Brazilians lived up to their favorite position as group winners. However, the South Americans suffered a defeat against the tied second France . The French surprisingly lost against the German team two days after their success against the Olympic champion . For the team of Stelian Moculescu it was the fourth victory in the fourth round game. Like the women before, the men of the DVV started better than expected beforehand. In the last game of the first round, however, the Germans had no chance against Brazil. Due to the poorer quotient, they took third place. As the fourth team, Cuba qualified for the next round. For Greece , which only won the direct duel between the two eliminated teams, and Australia without a win , the World Cup was over.
In Group C , Bulgaria started with a five-set win against Italy and remained undefeated in the other four games. Behind these two teams, the Czech Republic , the USA and Venezuela fought a close duel. The Czechs finally won despite a loss to the US team because of the better quotient. The South Americans for their part won against the United States, but still had to start their journey home tied with the opponents placed in front of them. The Iran won only two sets in five matches.
In Group D , the team from Serbia and Montenegro , who competed together for the last time despite the political division, managed a surprisingly clear victory against Russia right at the beginning and then only gave two sets. In addition, Tunisia reached the next round, while the tournament ended early for South Korea and Kazakhstan .

The last two places for the final round went to Puerto Rico and Canada, with the team from the Caribbean clearly winning the direct duel. Argentina could only win against Tunisia, which was also eliminated.
In Group F Brazil dominated, which gave a set only in the last game against the second-placed and previously unbeaten Bulgarians. With a 3-2 in the final group game against Italy, France reached third place. Behind the three European teams, the USA moved into the finals. The German team was unable to match the performance of the first round in any game in the intermediate round and remained without a win in the four games. Nevertheless, the results of the competition made it sixth. The last victory against Germany didn't help the Czechs anymore.
