Paweł Lech Zagumny (born October 18, 1977 in Jasło ) is a Polish volleyball player . He took part in four Olympic tournaments and was European champion in 2009.

Career

Zagumny's parents Lech and Hanna were first division volleyball players. He started his own career at MKS MDK Warsaw . The club won the Polish junior championship and Zagumny was named the best setter. Later he went to AZS Politechnika Warszawska , where he trained under the guidance of his father. In 1995 he moved to Czarni Radom with his father . However, since the Polish Volleyball Association forbade transfers of young players, Zagumny was initially not used in Radom. With the Polish juniors, with whom he had his first appearance in 1993, he became European junior champion in Israel in 1996 . In the same year he made his debut in the senior national team . He took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta , which ended for Poland in the preliminary round. In 1997 he won the Junior World Championship in Bahrain with the youth team . With his new club Czarni Radom, Zagumny was runner-up in the following season. After the debut of the Poles in the world league , he took part in the 1998 World Cup, but his team could only win one victory. The next two seasons in the league ended for Radom in fourth and sixth place.

In 2000, Zagumny went to Italy to join Edilbasso Padua . In Padua he was an immediate regular player, but his club did not get past twelfth place in the league. In 2001 the Poles played as hosts in Katowice for the first time in the final of the world league . Then Zagumny took part with the national team in the European Championship in Ostrava and came in fifth. In the Italian league he had to be content with 13th place in the following season. Due to an injury, the setter missed the 2002 World Cup . After eleventh place in the 2002/03 season, he left the Italian league and returned to Poland. With his new club AZS UWM Olsztyn , Zagumny reached the playoffs in third place in 2004 and was finally Polish runner-up after losing the final against Jastrzębski Węgiel . With the national team he qualified for the Olympic tournament in Athens . There the Poles lost to Brazil in the quarter-finals and were fifth.

2006/07 season
2007 with the national team

In the 2004/05 season Olsztyn again reached the final of the Polish championship and this time lost to Skra Bełchatów . After fourth place in the world league , Zagumny could not take part in the European Championship due to an injury . Therefore, he was also absent from the first league games of his club, which finished third at the end of the season. At the 2006 World Cup , Poland made it to the final, which Brazil won 3-0. Zagumny was named the tournament's best setter. The next season in Poland ended again in third place for his club. With the national team he traveled to the 2007 European Championship as fourth in the world league . Poland came into the second round and did not manage to win there. After Olsztyn had finished third in the Polish league for the third time in a row, Zagumny also took part in the 2008 Olympic Games . The Poles had to admit defeat to Italy in the tiebreaker in the quarter-finals .

2009 reached Zagumny with Olsztyn the national cup final against Skra Bełchatów . In September, the national team reached the final of the European Championship unbeaten and won the title with a win against France . Zagumny received the individual award for best player. He then left the Polish league for the second time and played for a year at Panathinaikos Athens . With the Greeks he was cup winner and runner-up. At the 2010 World Cup , Poland was eliminated in the second round. The setter returned to Poland and joined his current club, Zaksa Kędzierzyn-Koźle . In the 2010/11 season he was second with Zaksa in the league, in the national cup competition and in the CEV Cup . Since he took a break in the national team after the 2010 World Cup and refused to participate in the 2011 World League, coach Andrea Anastasi did not nominate him for the European Championship . For the World Cup , Zagumny returned to the team that finished the competition in second. After finishing third in the league, the setter won the 2012 World League with the Poles . He also experienced his fourth Olympic tournament in London .

Zagumny attended the Sports University in Warsaw . During his time in Olsztyn he studied at the University of Warmia-Masuria . On July 19, 2003 he married Oliwią Brochocką. His wife is also a volleyball player. The couple have a daughter and a son.
