The French men's national volleyball team is a selection of the best French players who represent the Fédération Française de Volley-Ball in international tournaments and internationals. The French finished third in the 2002 World Cup and European champions in 2015. They also won the World League in 2015 and 2017.

World championships

The national team before the 2014 World Cup

At the first two volleyball world championships in 1949 and 1952, the French were each sixth. In 1956 , they took seventh place as hosts. Four years later , they reached ninth place. In 1962 they were missing. From 1966 to 1982 they only achieved placements between 15 and 18. At the second World Cup in France in 1986 they climbed to sixth place. In 1990 they finished eighth and then they missed two tournaments. At the 2002 World Cup they achieved third place and thus their greatest success so far. In 2006 they finished sixth. Four years later , they did not get past eleventh place. At the 2014 World Cup, they lost to the German team in the game for third place . In 2018 they were eliminated in the second group stage and finished ninth.

Olympic games

When the French first competed in the 1988 Olympics , they finished eighth. During the tournament in 1992 they were eleventh. In 2004 in Athens they were eliminated in the preliminary round and finished ninth. When they took part again in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 , the result was the same. At the European qualifying tournament in Berlin they won the final against Germany and thus secured their starting place for Tokyo 2020 .

European championships

At the first European volleyball championship in 1948, the French were only defeated in the final against Czechoslovakia . In 1950 they were missing, but a year later they came third in their own country. This was followed by three eighth places. In the next two tournaments, places ten and fourteen went down. When the European Championship took place again in France in 1979, it was enough for the hosts to take fourth place. As eighth in 1981 and twelfth in 1983, they then performed worse again. In 1985 they improved to third place. In 1987 they lost the final against the Soviet Union . After that, they were once fifth and twice ninth before missing the 1995 European Championship. In 1997 they came in fourth, after which they finished sixth and seventh. In 2003 they lost their third final, this time against Italy . At the European Championships in 2005 and 2007 , the French came in seventh and eighth place. The fourth defeat in the final was at the 2009 European Championship against Poland . In 2011, the French were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Serbia and in 2013 in the same round against Russia . At the 2015 European Championships , they won the final against Slovenia and became European champions for the first time. As defending champions, they lost to the Czech Republic in the 2017 playoff round . At the EM 2019 they lost the game for third place against Poland.

World cup

At the first World Cup in 1965 , the French took eleventh and last place. The second appearance was only in 2003 and France finished fifth.

Nations League

At the first edition of the Nations League 2018 , the French reached the finals held in their own country as the best team in the preliminary round and only had to admit defeat to Russia in the final. At the 2019 tournament , they made it back to the finals, but not to the semifinals.

World league

In the years 1990 to 1992, France occupied places five, eight and eleven in the world league . From 1999 they were there again and were initially three times seventh and once fifth. After tenth place in 2003 and another fifth place in 2004, they came back in tenth place. In 2006 they reached the final for the first time, which they lost to Brazil . The following year they finished sixth and then places between seven and twelve. In 2015, the French won the competition for the first time with a final victory against Serbia. A year later they came third. In 2017 they prevailed against hosts Brazil in the final and became the last winner of the world league.
