qualification
Host Brazil and the top seven teams from the last World Cup were automatically qualified. There were five more starting places for the best-placed teams in the last continental tournaments. Italy ( European Championship 1989 ), South Korea ( Asia ), Cameroon ( Africa ), Canada ( NORCECA ) and Venezuela ( South America ) reached the finals in this way.
The last three participants were determined at a B tournament from April 12 to 22 in Japan . There twelve teams initially competed in two groups of six. The best three teams in each group played in the final group for participation in the World Cup tournament in Brazil.
