The Bulgarian men's national volleyball team is a selection of the best Bulgarian players that Balgarska Federazija po Wolejbol represents in international tournaments and internationals.
history
World championships
Bulgaria finished third in the first two volleyball world championships . In 1956 Bulgaria finished fifth. After missing their only World Cup tournament to date in 1960, they finished fourth and seventh in the next two tournaments. The greatest success so far came in 1970, when Bulgaria only lost to the GDR selection in the final . After that it went down to tenth place in 1978, but after that the results got better again with fifth and third place. After placing fifth, nine and seven, the worst result followed in 2002 (13th place). In the 2006 World Cup Bulgaria placed third in the 2010 World Cup seventh.
Olympic games
At the first Olympic tournaments in 1964 and 1968 , Bulgaria finished fifth and sixth. In 1972 in Munich , the Bulgarians rose to fourth place. In 1980 in Moscow she was only defeated by the host Soviet Union in the final. At the tournaments in 1988 and 1996 it was enough to place six and seven. In 2008 in Beijing , Bulgaria were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Russia and finished fifth. In 2012 in London , the Bulgarian men finished fourth after losing 3-1 to Italy .
European championships
In 1950 Bulgaria hosted the European Volleyball Championship for the first time and came fourth. A year later, Bulgaria were only defeated by the Soviet Union in the final. A third and two fourth places followed. Bulgaria worked its way up again from ninth place in 1967 before a setback with tenth place in 1979. In 1981 in their own country and in 1983 in the GDR, Bulgaria finished third. Above fifth it went down to eleventh, then there were four tournaments for fifth. From 1997 to 2001 the results were slightly worse. In 2003 the Bulgarians were eliminated in the preliminary round, in 2005 they were not there. They finished the 2007 European Championship in ninth place. Bulgaria won the bronze medal at the 2009 European Championships .
World cup
Bulgaria participated in the first three tournaments of the World Cup and finished ninth, fourth and sixth. In the 1980s and 1990s the Bulgarians were no longer represented. When they returned in 2007 they achieved the greatest success as third.
World league
Bulgaria first took part in the World League in 1994 and finished fourth. After finishing fifth in 1995, the Bulgarians were eliminated in the preliminary round in 1996. A year later they finished sixth, after which they failed in the second round. The same result came in 2003. Between 2004 and 2007, Bulgaria alternated fourth and fifth place. From 2008 to 2010 it was only seventh, ninth and seventh again. In 2011 they climbed to fifth place and in 2012 to fourth place.
European League
The Europa League has so far taken place without Bulgaria.
