The Soviet Union did not give up a set in the first four games before they had to go into the fifth set against Czechoslovakia and finally lost to Japan. The Soviet men won the remaining three games 3-0 each time and ultimately became the first Olympic champion in volleyball. Silver medalist Czechoslovakia also had only one defeat with their 2: 3 against the new title holder, but had to give way to the Soviet selection due to the worse set ratio. Host Japan won the bronze medal.
