2004 Summer Olympics / Volleyball (hall)
At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , indoor volleyball tournaments were held for women and men.
qualification
Twelve teams each qualified for the Olympic tournament for women and men. Greece was set to host. The top three teams at the 2003 World Cup also qualified.
In December 2003 and January 2004, continental qualifications took place in Africa, Europe and North and South America, the winners of which were there in Athens.
Men
- At the African tournament in Tunis , the hosts from Tunisia used their home advantage against Egypt , Algeria and South Africa .
- The European tournament took place in Leipzig . Russia defeated the Netherlands in the final . The German team was eliminated against the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
- At the NORCECA tournament in Caguas with eight participants, the USA prevailed against Cuba .
- The South American tournament in Caracas was won by Argentina against Chile , Peru and hosts Venezuela .
Women
- At the African tournament in Nairobi , the hosts from Kenya used their home advantage and prevailed against Egypt , Nigeria and the Seychelles .
- The European tournament took place in Baku ( Azerbaijan ). The German team managed with a 3: the known as the "Miracle of Baku" qualification 0 victory in the final against Turkey.
- At the NORCECA tournament in Santo Domingo , Cuba prevailed over the Dominican Republic .
- At the South American tournament in Caracas , the Dominican Republic took its second chance and won ahead of Argentina , Peru and Venezuela .
The last places were awarded at three tournaments in May 2004.
Men
- In Madrid (23-25 May), the Netherlands defeated hosts Spain in the decisive game .
- In Porto (May 21-23) Poland prevailed undefeated.
- France won in Tokyo (May 22–30) . Since the competition was also an Asian qualification, Australia also qualified .
Women
Host Japan won the tournament in Tokyo (May 8-16) . Since the competition was also an Asian qualification, South Korea also qualified . Russia and Italy occupied the other free places at the Olympic tournament.

mode
The mode was the same for women and men.
The twelve qualified teams were drawn into two groups with six participants each. The preliminary round was held according to the "everyone against everyone" mode. The best four teams in each group reached the quarter-finals. Then it went on in the simple knockout system until the final.
The games were played in Athens from August 14th to 29th. The venue was the Peace and Friendship Stadium (Stadio Irinis kai Filias) in the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex .

Preliminary round
In Group A, Serbia and Montenegro lost the opening game against Poland, but remained unbeaten afterwards and secured first place with the final victory against Greece. The Greeks were only ahead of Argentina because of the better ball point quotient. Poland also qualified for the quarter-finals with eight points. For France and the winless Tunisia, the tournament was over after the preliminary round.
In Group B, Brazil won the first four games and finished first despite a loss to the USA. Behind them were Italy, who lost two games in the tie-breaker . The USA and Russia also reached the quarter-finals with eight points. Australia could only win two sets and were eliminated after the preliminary round, as was the Netherlands.

Final round
In the quarter-finals, the final from the year 2000 was reissued on August 25th. Russia managed to take revenge against defending champions Serbia and Montenegro. The then third from Italy prevailed against Argentina and defeated the Russians in the semi-finals on August 27th. In the other semi-final, Brazil also defeated the USA in three sets. Russia won the bronze medal on August 29th. Brazil became the new Olympic champion with a 3-1 win in the final against Italy.

Preliminary round
In Group A, Brazil gave up the only two sets in the top match against Italy and took first place with ease. For Italy this 2: 3 was the only defeat in the preliminary round. The two Asian representatives South Korea and Japan also qualified for the quarter-finals, with the Koreans winning the direct duel. Kenya could not win a single set and, like Greece, were eliminated after the preliminary round.
In Group B, China lost to Cuba in five sets, but was able to secure first place ahead of the Eastern Europeans with a final win against Russia. Cuba finished third in front of the Americans despite a 3-0 draw against the USA. The German team started the tournament successfully against Cuba, but then suffered three defeats in a row and with the win against the Dominican Republic could no longer prevent the premature end.

Final round
In the quarter-finals on August 24th, the defending champion Cuba was able to prevail against Italy. The third from 2000, Brazil, also needed the tie-break against the USA, while the then finalist Russia had no problems against South Korea. China won the Asian duel against Japan and defeated the defending champions in the semi-finals on August 26th. Russia qualified for the final again with a 3-2 win against Brazil. There the team was defeated by the Chinese, who won Olympic gold for the second time since 1984, despite the 2-0 lead. Cuba won the bronze medal against Brazil.
