The hockey tournaments of the 2004 Summer Olympics took place from August 14 to 27, 2004 in the Olympic Hockey Center of the Elliniko Olympic Complex .

Hockey was first part of the program at the 1908 Olympic Games in London, and has been without interruption since 1928 . The women's competition was added in 1980 .

Both the German women and the Australian men won gold for the first time at these games.

Men's

Australia became an Olympic champion in hockey for the first time. It defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time in the final. The Golden Goal scored Jamie Dwyer . The German team won the game for third place against Spain 4: 3, also after extra time. Björn Michel scored the golden goal in the 80th minute.

Tournament mode

As in 2000 in Sydney , the men first played in two groups of six, A and B. Then the placements were determined in the knockout system . The first and second in the group played the semi-finals and then for the medals. The third and fourth of the groups played for places five to eight, the fifth and sixth for places nine to twelve.

Group A

Due to the better goal difference, Spain took first place ahead of Germany. Both qualified for the semifinals.

Ladies

The 2004 Olympic hockey tournament surprisingly won the German team against the favored team from the Netherlands. With two goals in the first half, Germany took the lead 2-0 (goal scorers Anke Kühn , Franziska Gude ). In the second half, after a penalty corner, the Netherlands managed the 1: 2 connection goal by Maartje Scheepstra. The compensation that would have meant an extension, however, no longer fell. With the title, Germany's hockey ladies wrote sporting history at the same time, because with this victory a German ladies team won a gold medal for the first time at an Olympic hockey tournament. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Germany lost to Spain in the final and won the silver medal.
