Philipp Crone
Philipp Crone (born March 16, 1977 in Cologne ) is a former German hockey player who became world champion in 2002 and 2006.
Career
Philipp Crone played for Rot-Weiß München . With this club he became German indoor champion in 2001.
1997 Crone was in the DHB squad, which won the European Indoor Championships and the FIH Champions Trophy . From 1998 the central defender was a regular in the German national hockey team . The 1998 world championship bronze was followed by two European championship titles in 1999, when the team won both indoors and outdoors. When he first participated in the Olympics in 2000 , he was only fifth. The 2001 European indoor championship title was followed by another victory in the FIH Champions Trophy. 2002Crone was then world champion with the German team in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). In 2003 Crone was part of the winning team at three international championships in a row: He was European champion, indoor world champion and indoor European champion. At the 2004 Olympic Games , the German team was the favorite as the reigning world and European champions, but lost to the Netherlands in the semi-finals; the team then secured the bronze medal against the Spaniards. In 2006 in Mönchengladbach , Crone became world champion for the second time.
For his sporting success he received the silver bay leaf .
Philipp Crone ended his career in May 2007 in order to be able to devote himself entirely to his profession as a journalist. As a journalist, Crone is active in the sports department of Bavarian TV , for ZDF and for the Süddeutsche Zeitung . With 349 internationals, 22 of them indoors, Crone surpassed Björn Michel . He remained a record national player until 2012 when he was overtaken by Matthias Witthaus .
