The Champions Trophy is - after the Olympic Games and the World Championships - the most prestigious hockey tournament for national teams. It was first hosted by the Pakistan Hockey Federation in 1978 . From 1980 to 2010, the tournament was held annually in alternating locations. The host is the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH).

A Champions Trophy for women was also launched in 1987. Initially, this tournament took place every two years. It also took place annually from 1999 to 2012.

Since 2012, the Champions Trophy has only taken place every two years, namely in the even years in which the Olympic Games and the World Championships are also held.

In April 2016, the FIH announced the last Champions Trophy tournaments for 2018.

By 2010, the six best national hockey teams in the league system determined the tournament winner, each against each other. The host association, the defending champion, the reigning Olympic champion, the reigning world champion and the best-placed associations at the last Olympic Games or World Championships were eligible to participate. Since 2001, the worst-ranked association had to sit out and this starting position was taken by the winner of the Champions Challenge .

Since 2011, the tournament has been played in two groups with eight participants. The host, the five best of the previous trophy and the winner of the Champions Challenge are eligible to participate. The remaining places are allocated by the FIH using wildcards . In 2016 the tournaments were played again with six participants.

Note: Great Britain actually only takes part in the Olympic Games, but in preparation for the Games they are allowed to take part in other international tournaments instead of England , Scotland or Wales within a period of 12 months beforehand .

Men's Champions Trophy

Only five countries were able to receive the Champions Trophy at the 34 tournaments held so far. The record winner is Australia with fourteen wins ahead of Germany with ten and the Netherlands with eight. Pakistan won three times, Spain was able to secure the trophy for the first time in 2004.
