Great Britain Hockey is the federation for the national hockey teams of Great Britain. The association is a member of the National Olympic Committee for Great Britain, the British Olympic Association .

task

Hockey in Great Britain is organized in the three national associations of England , Scotland and Wales . They are also independent members of the World Hockey Federation FIH and take part in all international hockey tournaments. An exception, however, are the Olympic Games, to which only one team from Great Britain has been allowed to start since 1928. Therefore, in addition to the national hockey teams of the state associations, there are also the national hockey teams (women and men) of Great Britain. These are organized by Great Britain Hockey and only appear at and in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Northern Ireland is part of the Irish Hockey Association , which will continue to represent the entire island of Ireland after the division.

Great Britain Hockey is an associate member of the World Hockey Federation and is not included in the FIH world rankings .

history

The association was founded on February 2, 1948 as the British Hockey Board . After the Second World War , Great Britain took over the Olympic Games in 1948 and of course the hosts wanted to take part in the hockey tournament. The World Hockey Federation had been responsible for the Olympic hockey tournaments since Amsterdam in 1928 and Great Britain had not participated since then. The boycott ended with the establishment of the British Association.

In 1948 Great Britain won the silver medal after a 4-0 defeat against India, and four years later the bronze medal in Helsinki . Then there was a long time without medals. The British men won bronze only in 1984 in Los Angeles , and gold four years later in Seoul . The women have won bronze twice so far: in Terassa in 1992 and in London in 2012 .
