The 17th FIH Champions Trophy for women in hockey took place from July 11th to 19th, 2009 in Sydney . The world's six best teams played at the State Hockey Center , which was used for the 2000 Summer Olympics . Argentina was the defending champion . The 2006 world champion and 2008 Olympic champion were the Netherlands .

Defending champions Argentina won the trophy again with a 4-3 penalty shootout win against hosts Australia.
