The 16th FIH Champions Trophy for women in hockey took place from May 17th to May 25th 2008 in Mönchengladbach . The six best teams in the world played in the hockey park where the 2006 men's field hockey world championship took place. The Netherlands were defending champions and world champions .
A 0-0 win against Argentina was enough for the German women's national hockey team to make it into the final for the sixth time on May 24th. There she met Argentina again, lost the final 6: 2 and thus reached second place.
Last year's winner, the Netherlands, faced China in the game for 3rd place and prevailed 3-0 in this game. Australia and Japan played for 5th place . Australia won the game 3-0.
