The Hockeypark , officially SparkassenPark Mönchengladbach due to a name sponsorship , is located in the Nordpark in Mönchengladbach in the immediate vicinity of Borussia-Park . It was the sole venue for the 2006 men's field hockey world championship .

history

The stadium was completed at the end of 2005, earlier than originally planned, and offers space for up to 12,000 people. The opening of the stadium was celebrated at Easter 2006 with a four-nation tournament. The participants were Germany , India , Argentina and Spain . The hockey park was named after the Warsteiner Brewery until 2015 . She had already announced in 2014 that she would no longer extend the current ten-year contract. Since March 27, 2015, the venue has officially been sponsored by the SparkassenPark Mönchengladbach . The contract with Sparkasse on the naming rights has a term of ten years with an option for five more years.

Infrastructure

The SparkassenPark has two artificial turf pitches , each with a floodlight system. The actual stadium has 9,046 seats and can be expanded to around 12,000 seats using mobile stands. There is also a side field, which is designed for around 850 spectators. An administration building with boxes and press rooms is also part of the stadium. The construction costs amounted to around 8.8 million euros.

The originally planned event hall, which was to be attached directly to the administration building, could not be realized. The seat shells have six different colors (three shades of blue, two shades of yellow and orange). They are arranged in such a way that seats of the same color are never directly above or next to each other. This should also make an empty or poorly filled stadium look more like a full stadium. There are numerous parking spaces within the Nordpark that can be used for events. Parking lot 4 is right next to the hockey park.

use

The biggest event at the sports facility so far was the men's field hockey world championship in 2006, where around 100,000 spectators found their way to the hockey park on twelve match days. Since then it has been the regular venue for the national teams of the German Hockey Association , which also maintains its office in the stadium.

The Bundesliga hockey team from Gladbacher HTC played some of its home games in SparkassenPark in the 2006/07 season. In addition, the facility served as the home stadium for the American football team of the Mönchengladbach Mavericks until 2011 .

The stadium is also used for concerts and other sporting events such as tennis exhibition matches. From 2007 to 2009 the Junior Bowl , the final of the GFL Juniors , the youth American football league, was played there.
