German Football League Juniors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Football League Juniors ( GFLJ ) is the top division for juniors within the German American Football Association AFVD . Since the 2001 season the GFLJ has existed as a national licensing league under the direct care of the AFVD. It currently consists of four groups (North, West Central, South). The group west has 5 teams, the other groups 6 each.

A season consists of two parts. First, the teams in their respective groups play each against each other. The best eight teams qualify for the play-offs. These are played in the KO system and end with the Junior Bowl.

The respective bottom of the table must play a relegation to remain in the league, provided there are other potential qualifiers for a place. In order to qualify for the GFLJ, both sporting and economic license requirements of the association must be met.

Initial classification

For the first GFL Juniors season, the junior teams who wanted to participate in the new league could register. Fifteen teams initially registered for the twelve places. In order to distribute the places, a rating for the years 1998-2000 was created for each team. This rating consisted of the number of players in the squad and the performance of the teams. These values were weighted according to a certain key and resulted in a final value.

This resulted in the following ranking:

1 Hamburg Junior Devils 158.90 47 205.90

The SG Hanau / Obertshausen withdrew at an early stage, so that ultimately the teams NFA Monarchs and Weinheim Longhorns would not have made it into the GFL-J. A solution was found so that all teams could compete. For the first year, the southern group was divided into two seasons of three teams each, of which the bottom of the table was relegated, so that the originally planned team strengths per group were achieved for the 2002 season. In addition, the Braunschweig Junior Lions withdrew, so that the northern group only played with three teams.

particularities

In the 2007 season, only three teams competed in the northern group.

The Junior Bowl XXXI in 2012 was the only one so far where two teams from the same city clashed.

Junior Bowl

The Junior Bowl is the final of the junior teams. It has been held since 1982. Since 2001, the participants have been determining themselves via the GFLJ.
