The Mannheim Bandits (formerly: Rhein-Neckar Bandits) are an American football team from Mannheim and a division of the MTG Mannheim club . The team emerged from the merger of the Hockenheim Renegades and the Heidelberg Toreros .
history
precursor
- In 1985 the Heidelberg Black Knights Regionalliga-Mitte played, from 1986 to 1988 in the 2. Bundesliga-Mitte, then in the Association League Baden-Württemberg, in 1995 only in the District League Baden-Württemberg. From 1997 they appeared as Heidelberg Toreros , first in the Baden-Württemberg Association League, then in the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga until 2003.
- The Reilingen Renegades took part in the Baden-Württemberg Association League in 1990 and in the Regionalliga Mitte (North) in 1991. From 1992 they appeared as Rhein-Neckar Renegades , until 1993 in the Regionalliga, then in the Association League, from 1995 to 1997 in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg. In 1998 the name was changed to Hockenheim Renegades . In 2002 and 2003 they took part in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg A.
Bandits
- 2003: In the middle of 2003 representatives of the Hockenheim Renegades and Heidelberg Toreros met for a first exploratory discussion. It quickly became clear that there could only be a future as a team. At the end of 2003 this was founded under the name Rhein-Neckar Bandits .
- 2004: The first season of the Rhein-Neckar Bandits in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, which ended with a perfect season as champions.
- 2005: After the break with the previous main club (DJK Hockenheim), the decision was made to move to Mannheim . Here, in MTG Mannheim, a club was found that supported the team's great goals. In the first season in the Regionalliga-Mitte one experienced ups and downs, could only score one point away, but always offered the audience in the home stadium a football festival with many points. So at the end of the day there was fourth place and relegation.
- In 2008 in the Regionalliga-Mitte they lost second place behind the Kaiserslautern Pikes . Both teams were promoted to the second division.
- The German Football League 2 2009 ended with a balanced record and 5th place.
- 2010: At the beginning of 2010 a second team was founded. This has been playing in the Baden-Württemberg state league since the 2010 season. She was trained by Cedrick Hardy.
- 2012 : After the bandits were promoted to GFL 1, they were initially considered outsiders. Of 14 games, however, 10 were won, including in autumn against the defending champion Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns . Behind the Hallern, the bandits took second place in the table and were able to qualify for a home game in the play-offs. Here they were defeated by the Dresden Monarchs in the quarter-finals .
- In 2013 the Bandits reached fourth place in GFL 1 Süd with nine wins and qualified again for the playoffs. In the quarterfinals they lost to the later German Bowl winners, the New York Lions from Braunschweig, with 21:28.
- 2014 was a year of consolidation. With three wins and a seventh place, the bandits only secured relegation.
- the German Football League 2015 brought two wins and thus again the penultimate place including relegation.
- In the German Football League 2016 , the Bandits lost all 14 games with a score of 12:51 and were also clearly defeated by the Ingolstadt Dukes in the relegation games .
- In 2017 the bandits were qualified for the German Football League 2 . But the first team disintegrated after relegation from the first division, so that no more playable team came about. For this reason, it was decided to restart with the previous 2nd team and the remaining players from the 1st team in the lowest division, the district league BaWü. The season ended in second place with nine wins and one loss.
- After the end of the 2017 season, the name was changed to Mannheim Bandits as a sign of a new beginning . Thomas Zupon was hired as head coach for the season. Through a league reform, they were promoted to the Baden-Württemberg district league.
- They ended the 2018 season with 7 wins and 2 losses in the district league. With a score of 287: 122, the Bandits again made it to 2nd place. After winning two more relegation games against the Offenburg Miners, they were promoted to the Baden-Württemberg state league. In the offseason there were also personnel changes in the coaching crew: Thomas Smythe (HC / OC / QB), Kevin Moore (DC), Kevin Hambrecht (OL), Lars Naber (RB), Marcel Siegmund (WR), Jay Lopez (LB ). They also received support from the coaching crew of their own U19 GFLJ team: Andy Meyer (HC / DL), Danny Washington (OC / RB), Daniel McCray (DC / LB), Silvio Keil (OL), Tobias Lederer (QB ), Nadja Quast (WR), Alexander Schneider (DB).
Mannheim Bandits teams
- Bandits, the 1st team (tackle football), played in the Baden-Württemberg regional league in 2017
- Junior Bandits, youth team (tacklefootball), played in the youth league (GFLJ) in 2008 and 2009. After losing a relegation game against the youth team of the Franken Knights, it was relegated to the youth performance league in 2009. Due to a league restructuring, the Juniors have been playing in the German Youth League (GFLJ) again since 2010. In 2012 the team managed to take part in the play-offs for the first time.
