The Kaiserslautern Pikes are an American football and cheerleading club in Kaiserslautern . The club was founded in September 2003 and was promoted to GFL 2 in 2008 . The Kaiserslautern Warriors , who played from 1987 to 1995 and were able to advance to the second division, and the Kaiserslautern Cougars, who played from 2001 to 2003, can be seen as predecessor clubs.

Both the team colors red, white and silver as well as the team name Pikes ( English for : pike ) are intended to express the bond with the city of Kaiserslautern. Red, white and silver are the colors of the city's coat of arms, the pike the city's heraldic animal.

history

In 2003 the Pikes emerged from the Kaiserslautern Cougars. As president, Stefan Bräuning headed the club, which had also been on the board of the Warriors. The pike training operations take place on the ESC West Kaiserslautern facility . The sporting history reads very successfully, already in the first season the second place could be achieved in the state league, which meant promotion to the upper league. The league ended in 2005 with the championship, which meant promotion to the regional league, the third highest German division. Here, too, the pikes were immediately successful and finished the league games as champions of the northern division. The promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ( GFL 2 ) was then narrowly missed in the play-off games against the Franconian Timberwolves . After a 14:40 defeat in the first leg, the Pikes had to win their home game by at least 26 points. Almost succeeded: in the middle of the fourth quarter the Pikes were 28-0 in front, but a late touchdown by the Timberwolves, about 30 seconds before the end of the game, sealed the elimination of the Pikes. Started as a co-favorite in 2007, the season ended in a relatively disappointing fourth place.

For the 2008 season, Sven Gloss, who had previously worked as offensive coordinator , took over the post of head coach from Andreas Schaaf. Long-time player Eddy Raab became the new defensive coordinator . The season could be concluded with the championship title. Only once did the Pikes have to leave the pitch as a loser. Against the Rhein-Neckar Bandits there was an away defeat. However, the competitor from the Electoral Palatinate , with a tie, was left behind due to the direct comparison won (34: 0 and 21:42). The last game of the season, against the Freiburg Sacristans , saw a record crowd of 1630 spectators.

Because the Starnberg Argonauts did not appear in the relegation games , they were promoted to the GFL2-Süd without a fight. In the 2009 season , the Pikes played in front of an average of 900 spectators and achieved a midfield position. In the following year, the decline could not be avoided. But after only one season in the Regionalliga, in which the Pikes were undefeated champions, they returned to the GFL2. On the last matchday of the 2011 season , a new club-internal audience record was set in the game against Frankfurt Universe with 1,600 visitors, 600 of them from Frankfurt alone. In the 2013 season , the Pikes took 8th place in GFL 2 and thus relegated back to the Middle Regional League. In the 2014 season, 3rd place was achieved in the Middle Regionalliga.

After a negative season record of one win and nine defeats, the previous head coach, Stefan Heiler, resigned after the last home game in July 2015. In September of the same year, the previous defensive coordinator Frank Kneip took up this post. Also in September 2015 there was extensive restructuring at the top of the club. After most of the previous board could no longer stand up for re-election, Patrick Gödtel was elected as the new first chairman by the general assembly.

With eight wins, one draw and one defeat, the Pikes achieved first place in the table in the Oberliga Mitte in 2016 and the associated direct promotion to the Regionalliga Mitte. The Pikes started the 2017 season with a new coaching staff led by Head Coach Oscar Loveless.
