The Saarland Hurricanes are an American football team from Saarbrücken that played in the German Football League for many years . The Hurricanes are currently playing in group south of the German Football League 2 (GFL2).
history
The Saarland Hurricanes were created in 1996 from a merger of the two football clubs Dillingen Steelhawks (from 1984 to 1989: Dillingen Hurricanes ) and Saarbrücken Wölfe (from 1989 to 1991: Saarbrücken Ghostbusters ). In 1989 a third football club, the Saarlouis Wölfe, stopped playing. The players at that time were incorporated into the Dillingen Hurricanes .
In the first year the Hurricanes were champions of the 2nd Bundesliga South. In 2000 the team rose to the top German league, the German Football League . After four unsuccessful seasons, the then financially weak club signed Kirk Heidelberg as coach for the 2005 season , with whose help the Hurricanes achieved their first participation in the play-offs. The 2006 season ended with fifth place. In the 2007 season there was only one victory and they ended up in sixth and last place in the table due to the lost direct comparison against the Darmstadt Diamonds . The two games of the relegation against the Munich Cowboys were lost with 7:25 and 2:48 and they were relegated. After a fifth and a fourth place in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, the championship was achieved in 2010 and a renewed promotion to the GFL.
In 2011 our own artificial turf pitch was inaugurated in Burbach am Matzenberg and is called Home of the Canes . In 2011, the first team in the GFL finished sixth and after the league was expanded to eight teams in 2012, they finished seventh with three wins and one draw.
2013 was the most successful year in the club's history. In the GFL, they finished fifth and won four of the seven home games. The A-youth (also called U19) became German champions with a perfect season . The youth play their games on the artificial turf pitch and have won all league games on the pitch since the inauguration in 2011. After the 2011 championship in the regional league and the associated promotion to the Bundesliga, the championship in the Bundesliga group in the middle succeeded in 2012. In the quarter-finals of the German championship there was the first and so far only defeat. The semi-final against the Berlin Rebels was won in Saarbrücken after a temporary deficit of 0:20 in the first quarter with 30:26. In the final of the German championship they were already 18-0 behind shortly before half-time. Up until the last quarter, the young people fought their way back to balance. When the clock ran out, they scored with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to win the 26:25 and won the German championship. The B-youth, which has been in the game since 2012, was also able to win all home games that year. In 2012 she lost only one game in the final tournament for the championship of the Regionalliga Hessen / Thuringia / Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland and became runner-up. They also had a perfect season in 2013, winning all games.
